Next Gen PFMA members will be privy to confidential, behind the scenes pet food labeling workgroup discussions; non-members will learn the future of pet food labels after the AAFCO Pet Food Committee (PFC) votes and accepts recommendations by the Pet Food Labeling Workgroup.
The Model Bill PC Harmonization Working Group met in a face-to-face meeting in Gaithersburg MD on Monday, October 17, 2016. As a member of the Harmonization Working Group, the Executive Director of Next Gen PFMA participated in work which ensured that the language was consistent between each section of the AAFCO Model Bill, and proofreading for typographical errors.
The true importance of this meeting was the opportunity to represent the Next Gen PFMA trade association both in the working group and working with other industry leaders and regulatory officials. As a result of our efforts, we were approved for membership on the Pet Food Labeling Committee Working Group. What this means to our members is as there are discussions and issues which may impact the pet food industry (and there will be many!) our members will be able to make input and be involved in the decision-making process. The alternative is to watch and wait. For those who are not members of a trade association represented at the Pet Food Labeling Modernization Workgroup, there will be less planning time for label changes.
Ultimately, pet food packaging will be required to display different information than what is currently required. If your pet food company has not already joined Next Gen PFMA the time is as good as it’s going to get!
